All things college ball

College football Season so far. Big Ten vs SEC? Heisman? Big game results? Got it all!

Entering one of the biggest Saturdays in college football this season, it is essential to take a step back and examine what has brought us to this moment. In the era of NIL, with high-level players getting paid millions, the pressure intensifies. How will they respond?

Here are two of my favorite takeaways so far:

  • Big Ten Takeover in the top 10: After winning the last two national championships, the big ten has been trying to prove they may be the football conference. Michigan in 2023, Ohio State in 2024. 2025 season? They are trying to do the same. With the new weekly updated rankings, the Big Ten holds the top two teams in the country (Ohio State #1 and Oregon #2), with Penn State and Indiana also in the top 10. How many teams could they possibly sneak into the college football playoffs?
  • Two Heisman candidates to watch: In the era of key players coming from the transfer portal, it is not surprising that the top two Heisman candidates are transfers. These two quarterbacks also play for top 10 teams in the country and are delivering impressive stats. Not only are they Heisman candidates, but they are players to watch out for in your mock drafts for the NFL season. Is Mateer from Oklahoma the next great quarterback following Jalen Hurts, Caleb Williams, Baker Mayfield, and Kyler Murray? Will Mendoza bring IU back to the playoffs?
  1. Fernando Mendoza (Indiana, QB)
  • Big win over Iowa on the road this week.
  1. John Mateer (Oklahoma, QB)
  • Hurt right now, but seems to be returning vs rivals Texas.

Key Games of the Week (Week 5)

These matchups were especially important — for rankings, Heisman pressure, playoff-seed implications.

  • Oregon @ Penn State — Oregon wins 30-24 on the road. This was a huge win for Dan Lanning. Almost guarantees a playoff berth with their remaining schedule. Also leaves questions surrounding Drew Allar and his ability to win big games.
  • Alabama @ Georgia Two words, one name: Ty Simpson. This kid stepped up in a big-time moment on the road vs a very good and well-respected Georgia team. Not only did he prove himself, but he proved Alabama, keeping them in playoff contention and pushing them back into the top 10.
  • LSU at Ole Miss — Ole Miss takes care of Brian Kelly and his squad 24-19 at home. How is Brian Kelly going to handle this one with his job potentially on the line? LSU needs to make the playoffs THIS year, and this was a tough loss for them. How will they respond? I personally still see them making the playoffs with how electric their offense is combined with a stellar defense led by Whit Weeks.

Other Notes

  • UVA dramatically upsets Florida State!
  • Illinois wins close over USC!
  • Georgia Tech wins in overtime against Wake Forest.
  • Notre Dame finally picks up a big win vs a decent Arkansas team.
